Shining pagodas, smiling people, undiscovered hill-tribes and curious government regulations: Myanmar is a land of contrasts. Although relatively under the tourist radar compared to the rest of Asia, this nation deserves the detour. It has only been effectively open to tourism for a few years, and there are still many places in the country that are off limits. The result is a happy and curious group of people who are generally authentically glad to see you discovering their beautiful country.
The more well-known areas such as Mandalay and Bagan can be trying but ultimately worth it for the plethora of impressive religious sites of temples and pagodas. Long hill treks into the back country bring huge rewards including visiting curious villagers and eating some of the best food we’ve had traveling. Comfort levels and hygiene aren’t always perfect, but it is so far our favorite country to travel.
All in all, the time to visit Myanmar is NOW.
